Ritha Belizaire, MD

General Surgeon

Born and raised in Midland, Texas, Dr. Ritha Belizaire earned her Bachelor's degree in biomedical engineering from Yale University in 2002 where she was also a member of the women's varsity soccer team. She completed her medical education at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio in 2008 and entered surgical residency at the University of Cincinnati. During that time, she was awarded an NIH T32 training grant to complete a two year research fellowship. Dr. Belizaire spent one year at Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx, NY practicing Acute Care Surgery and then completed a colorectal fellowship at Mt. Sinai West/St. Luke's Hospital in New York City. After fellowship, she served the downtown Brooklyn community at The Brooklyn Hospital Center practicing general and colorectal surgery for two years. With her then 10 month old daughter, she decided to move closer to home, and in 2019 she joined the UT Health Houston faculty as an assistant professor of surgery, teaching medical students and surgical residents and serving as the Vice Chair of Diversity and Inclusion for the Department of Surgery.
